Dr. Wood started working on Polkadot in mid-2016 and released the white paper in October 2016. By 2017, Dr. Wood had teamed up with Peter Czaban to form the Web3 Foundation. This group is a non-profit group that helps with the research and support of Polkadot. By May 2020, Polkadot had a test net (Kusama) up and running, and the main net had just been launched. By block 1,248,328, the community held its first vote (Aug. 21, 2020). You might be thinking this is just another boring POS chain, but you would be wrong with Polkadot. They do run a main blockchain network called the relay chain, and they also run several side connecting chains called parachains. Polkadot uses these side chains to connect to several other blockchains like a phone company that connects people. They are a business in themselves, but their main goal is to connect people or other companies.
With Polkadot being a POS system, holders are encouraged to stake their DOT. Reward payouts on this chain are higher than on a lot of chains. This is due to the inflation that occurs at 10 percent every year. This means that if you increase your holdings by 13% through staking in a year, you will have made a 3% profit. Another use for DOT is that it is used for community voting power.

This team is trying and, at the moment, succeeding in bringing several chains together. They have a skilled group building the project up. They have been open about the goals they have for the project and allow the community to be involved in decision-making by using community-elected council members for representation. Transaction fees have never been very high, and the speed is decent.
w. It is still a newer blockchain not always a downside, but it also means it still has not stood the test of time completely. Polkadot has experienced two major hacker breaches, both of which resulted in millions of dollars in losses. Understanding how fees are calculated is confusing to new investors. They have a limited amount of parachains they can use due to security reasons.
